Violence against women and children affects everybody. It impacts on the health, wellbeing and safety of a significant proportion of Australians throughout all states and territories and places an enormous burden on the nation’s economy across family and community services, health and hospitals, income-support and criminal justice systems.

This resource highlights results from Attitudes matter: The 2021 National Community Attitudes towards Violence against Women Survey (NCAS), Findings for young Australians. It will be useful to Australian policymakers and practitioners seeking evidence on young Australians’:

  • understanding and attitudes regarding violence against women
  • attitudes towards gender inequality
  • intentions to intervene if witnessing violence or disrespect against women.

Specifically, the fact sheet covers:

  • changes over time in understanding of violence against women and attitudes towards this violence and gender inequality
  • the degree to which young Australians demonstrate “advanced” attitudes and understanding
  • gendered differences in attitudes and understanding
  • understanding of consent
  • intention to intervene prosocially when witnessing verbal abuse
  • knowledge of domestic violence services.
