Attitudes matter: The 2021 National Community Attitudes towards Violence against Women Survey (NCAS), Summary for Australia
This report provides a summary of the results from the main research report on the 2021 National Community Attitudes towards Violence against Women Survey (NCAS).
The NCAS is the world’s longest-running population-level survey of community attitudes towards violence against women. The NCAS tells us how people understand violence against women, their attitudes towards it, and if there has been a change over time. It also gauges attitudes to gender equality and people’s preparedness to intervene when witnessing abuse or disrespect towards women.
This report presents a summary of findings from the 2021 NCAS and considers these in the context of related research. The findings are drawn from interviews with a representative sample of 19,100 Australians aged 16 years or over. The report includes further information about the research design and methodology, with detailed information available in the technical report.
The 2021 NCAS summary report will be useful for stakeholders tasked with responding to, reducing and preventing violence against women. This includes policymakers, practitioners, practice designers, educators, researchers, community organisations and media.
The NCAS findings can help to shape policy and programs aimed at the prevention of violence against women by highlighting:
- gaps in the community’s understanding of violence against women
- areas where problematic attitudes towards violence against women persist
- factors related to understanding and attitudes that may contribute to and perpetuate a climate of violence against women
- changes in understanding and attitudes regarding violence against women over time.
