Sam Mostyn, who championed the AFL’s Respect and Responsibility (R&R) Policy as the code’s first female commissioner, has been appointed Chair of Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety (ANROWS).

Ms Mostyn said she is committed to ANROWS’s strategic goal of reducing the rates of domestic and family violence and sexual assault in Australia.

“The extent of domestic, family and sexual violence against women and their children in Australia is simply unacceptable,” Ms Mostyn said on Friday.

“I have long admired the work ANROWS is doing to ensure policy and practice is effectively informed by evidence.  I am extremely proud to be serving an organisation that is confronting such a serious and complex social issue.  I am honoured by the appointment and hope to bring experience from a wide range of sectors and industries that supports the work of ANROWS.”

Ms Mostyn has held roles across the corporate, government, sports, arts, international development and civil society fields; from Reconciliation Australia, the National Mental Health Commission and as Chief of the Defence Force’s Women’s Advisory Group. Ms Mostyn is currently a non-executive director of Virgin, Mirvac, Transurban and is the Chair of Citibank Australia.

ANROWS CEO Dr Heather Nancarrow welcomed Ms Mostyn on Friday.

“Sam brings her breadth of experience, unwavering sense of social responsibility and good governance to ANROWS at an exciting time, as we prepare to showcase the leading researchers and practitioners in our sector next month at Acting on Evidence – the ANROWS 2nd National Conference,” Dr Nancarrow said.

Sam Mostyn follows on from ANROWS’s inaugural Chair, Emeritus Professor Anne Edwards AO, whose academic background was key to success in ANROWS’s establishment phase.
