Violence against women and children affects everybody. It impacts on the health, wellbeing and safety of a significant proportion of Australians throughout all states and territories and places an enormous burden on the nation’s economy across family and community services, health and hospitals, income-support and criminal justice systems.

ANROWS co-design workshop in Mount Isa

Thursday, 27th October 2016

By Kara Beavis, Senior Project Officer, Queensland Integrated Service Responses to Domestic and Family Violence Project, ANROWS

On the 25th October, ANROW’s Board Director Shirley Slann and research team member Kara Beavis co-facilitated a workshop in Mount Isa. The ‘oasis of the Outback’ has hospitable and diverse communities, as well as high levels of domestic and family violence. As such, this community is one of three trial sites that have been selected by the Queensland Government to trial an integrated service response to domestic and family violence.

Shirley and Kara were in Mount Isa to conduct a co-design workshop with professionals who work in the field. ANROWS is currently working with government and non-government stakeholders across Queensland on a project funded by the Office for Women and Domestic Violence Reform. ANROWS’ work supports the implementation of integrated service responses in Queensland and delivering on the recommendations of the Special Taskforce on Domestic and Family Violence report, Not Now, Not Ever: Putting an End to Domestic and Family Violence in Queensland.

In total, twenty-eight people attended the Mount Isa co-design workshop from the local women’s refuges, the local neighbourhood centre and community legal service, as well as from a number of relevant statutory agencies. The group provided invaluable inputs into the development of a Common Risk Assessment and Risk Management Framework, a high risk intervention model, information sharing guidelines, and an accompanying suite of state-wide tools for practitioners.

The next steps for this project are a co-design workshop in Cairns then Brisbane, followed by data analysis and report writing. The Brisbane workshop will include an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stream co-lead by Shirley Slann and Aunty Lillian Gray. A report will be sent to the Office for Women and Domestic Violence reform in December, and a State of Knowledge paper made available on the ANROWS website in early 2017. Thank you Mt Isa for the warm welcome!
